tinkle spin out is a fantasy based on the piano introduction to tinkle trinkle by thelonius monk.
the piano figure is slowly spun out through the piece in a hypnotic and obsessive manner - slowly developing but never ceasing.
the idea for the piece was inspired by a piece of film footage from the documentary straight no chaser showing thelonius monk spinning around in an airport lobby like some miss-placed whirling dervish seeking oblivion. this touching image seemed to offer an insight into the character of monk’s music.
