Saxophone quartet [15′].
PHO was written for the TUMB saxophone quartet of Peter van Bergen. It is one of the works which I wrote while staying in Greece in the winter and spring of 1998. Like the other pieces written around this time I was trying to develop a homophonic music that was constantly on the verge of polyphony. I took the natural time and tempo of speech (words - phrases- sentences- paragraphs) - something that can also be heard in taxim improvisation for instance (or koran recitation) - and composed a polyphonic music where all the parts of the quartet seem to be working to the whole.
I'm currently working on an arrangement for string quartet to be performed by the Zephyr quartet.
- October 1998; TUMB quartet, Bimhuis, Amsterdam.
